Overview
Stenogyne kauaulaensis (no common name), a member of the Laminaceae (mint) family, is a short-lived perennial vine 1 to 3.2 m (3.3 to 10.5 ft) tall. The stems are flexuous (full of bends and curves), when young they have a pink- to purple-red tinge. The leaves are light green, broadly ovate (oval shape, like an egg) that are 3.5 to 7 cm (1.4 to 2.8 in) by 2.5 to 4.7 cm (1 to 1.9 in). The flowers are 5 or 6 per verticillaster (flowers are arranged in a seeming whorl), with 2 or 3 raised on peduncles (the stalk of the inflorescence). The corolla (the petals of a flower) is purple, with a light green tinge clouded along the inner throat of the flower. The stamens (male fertilizing organ of a flower, consisting of pollen containing anther and a filament) are purple and extend beyond the upper corolla lip. The nutlets (small nuts) are fleshy and approximately 8 millimeters mm (0.3 in).
