On World Wetlands Day 2021, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) celebrates the completed restoration of more than 37,000 acres of pocosin wetlands at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. It is fitting that we recognize unique pocosins on a day intended to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet. Pocosin and other peatlands only cover about 3 percent of Earth’s surface. The restoration at Pocosin Lakes marks the completion of one of the nation’s largest wetlands restoration projects of its kind. This effort is a great example of how the Service is working together with federal, state, and private partners to conserve one of the nation’s most unique habitats.
