Anhinga
The name Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) comes from a Brazilian Indian tribe, meaning 'devil bird' or, 'evil spirit of the woods.' The Anhinga also has a couple of nicknames. One is 'water turkey' because of the shape of its tail. Another nickname is 'snake bird' because of its long neck and slim profile when it swims with the body submerged and it's head barely out of the water. The Anhinga's diet is mostly fish. Anhinga are only occasional visitors on Alligator River Refuge.
