Part of the Hole-in-the Tree Gang

 To conserve, protect, and enhance, fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people, is the mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The pictured raccoon (Procyon lotor) appropriated a tree hollow for shelter on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Raccoons are just one of the hundreds of wildlife and bird species found on national wildlife refuges. Raccoons are omnivores, they eat everything from frogs, fish, mice, and insects, to berries, nuts, eggs and just about anything. Their wide diet variety and clever dexterity at reaching and obtaining food makes them adaptable to a diversity of habitats.
