Every year, Friends of Wolf Creek (FOWC) National Fish Hatchery, Inc. presents a $1,000 scholarship to a local high school graduating senior that is attending college. The scholarship is funded through proceeds from Friends of Wolf Creek Gift shop sales and donations not specified for kids, senior and wounded warrior fishing events. Scholarship applications are sent to the school system several weeks in advance, with all submissions due by April 30. Each applicant must submit not only a completed application, but also a high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, and an essay. The essay prompt is “What I see as the most important environmental problem impacting natural resources in this region and how I would persuade local, state and federal officials to take action.” Once submitted, the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery President, Vice-President, Administrative Assistant and board members read through submitted applications, and choose one student to receive the scholarship.
This year, Baylee Hart is the recipient of the FOWC scholarship. Baylee recently graduated from Russell County High School, and plans to attend Lindsey Wilson College in the fall. Baylee wrote about endangered mussels, which she learned about through visiting Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery. At an awards ceremony on May 22, 2022, FOWC President James Clark along with Administrative Assistant Lisa Rosenthal presented Baylee with the scholarship. Baylee will complete 8 hours of volunteer work at Wolf Creek NFH as part of the requirements for receiving this scholarship.
