Loony Tunes

Several common loons (Gavia immer) are visiting Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Common loons swim underwater to forage, mostly eating fish and shellfish. After diving for food, loons will preen to keep their feathers waterproof. When preening is complete, they stand up on the water and flap their wings hard to get the feathers back in place. Loon calls and songs are distinctive and unique, click to listen.
