Getting students outdoors on a crisp fall day to experience an interactive, hands-on day of learning was the goal at our annual Outdoor Adventure Day at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery. Each year, 4th grade students from the local elementary schools are invited to the hatchery to spend a day immersed in nature and learning by traveling through outdoor stations where they participate in various mini-lessons.
At this year’s event on October 19, 2022, 200 4th grade students visited 10 different stations. The station topics included: How clothing was made long ago using a spinning wheel and fur from live rabbits, archery and casting, waste management and recycling, constructing an aqueduct, water safety, composting, birds of prey, fire safety, furs/mammals of Kentucky, and macroinvertebrates.
Wolf Creek NFH is fortunate to have several partners that are willing to spend the day providing these hands-on lessons for the students. Partnerships include: The Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc., Three Springs Fiber Farm, Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky Division of Water, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Liberty Nature Center, Kentucky Division of Waste Management, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment Cooperative Extension Service, and Kentucky Division of Forestry.
At the end of the event, students, teachers, presenters, volunteers and staff had experienced an uplifting day. Any time learning can take place outdoors, students get excited. Wolf Creek NFH is proud to be able to host events such as this with valuable partners, to bring educational, memorable experiences to local students.
