Winter Programs and Tours at Pocosin Lakes NWR

Pocosin Lakes NWR is excited to announce regular weekly winter programs to share the refuge's fascinating wildlife with visitors. Come to the Red Wolf Center to learn about these endangered wolves and visit a pair of live wolves, or join us for a winter tour of the Pungo Unit to see thousands of wintering waterfowl and learn about the role of the refuge in providing a waterfowl sanctuary! The refuge is able to offer these programs thanks to our partnership with the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, Tyrrell County Public Library, Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft, and others.

Program Schedule

Wintering Waterfowl Tour

Join in on a guided tour of the Pungo Unit to watch the magnificent migratory waterfowl. The tour leader will talk about the role Pungo plays in providing a waterfowl sanctuary and the details of Tundra Swan migration! This tour is a follow-the-leader with participants driving their own vehicle following the tour leader. Vehicles are subject to road conditions on the Pungo Unit. It is recommended to arrive with a full tank of gas and be driving in a 4WD capable vehicle to avoid getting stuck on the refuge. Roads on the refuge have a weight limit of 8,000lbs. The tour will begin at the Pungo Unit Kiosk at 600 Refuge Rd Pantego, NC.

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is not responsible for vehicles getting stuck on the refuge and you are driving on the refuge at your own risk!

Wintering Waterfowl Tours are only offered December through mid-February. Migratory waterfowl are present depending on environmental factors so February tours may have the ability of being cut short due to the absence of the waterfowl. For more information on the program you can contact 252-216-6634.

Red Wolf Program

Join Katerina Ramos, Red Wolf Education and Outreach Coordinator from North Carolina Wildlife Federation in learning about the history and biology of red wolves. Programs include a talk about the red wolves and the ability to visit the live red wolves at the red wolf center. Programs are only offered at the times listed.

There is no guarantee that you will be able to see the live red wolves as they are a shy and elusive species.
