Partnering to promote Reading and Environmental Education

Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery co-sponsored Read Across Russell County along with Russell County Public Library, Russell County Education Association and Lake Cumberland State Resort Park.  This event, held on March 21, welcomed any student in the Russell County school system, along with parents and guardians. The free event included reading, learning, activities, food and lots of fun!  With over 400 in attendance, the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery activity area was very busy!

Environmental Education/Outreach Specialist Marsha Hart at Read Across Russell County event.

Marsha Hart, Environmental Education/Outreach Specialist at the hatchery, provided information about pollinators and their importance.  Children of all ages, and even some adults, took a turn at the spinning wheel, which would eventually stop on a question about pollinators or pollination.  After each participant read the question aloud and provided an answer, they would receive a prize of either a temporary trout tattoo, U.S. Fish and Wildlife pencil/notepad/ruler, keychain, or a USFWS coloring/informational book. Many of the children enjoyed sharing what they know about pollination, and many learned something new!  One question on the wheel, “How can you help pollinators?” led to discussions about personal responsibility and environmental stewardship.

Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery is proud to join with other community partners and co-sponsor events of this nature. It is always encouraging to see children getting excited about environmental issues, and events like this provide the perfect opportunity.
