Crossvine

Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata) is a woody vine native to the southeastern United States. It is in bloom on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Its yellow tubular flowers attract hummingbirds. The flowers mature into brown, flat capsules that are 4 to 8 inches long. The vines can climb trees up to 50 feet into the canopy. The name ‘crossvine’ comes from the brown cross in the center of the light-colored pith. The bark of the vines is black. Crossvine is adapted to both well-drained and poorly-drained soils, but does not tolerate flooding.
