Partnerships in the Pacific Islands are important when saving endangered species. Making those community connections allows agencies to be more effective in what has come to be known as the Endangered Capital of the World.
The Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife Office in Honolulu and the Oʻahu Army Natural Resource Program engaged in a work exchange with each team visiting a site the other managed. This partnership exchange allowed the Service to foster a face-to-face relationship with other partners in conservation, which is invaluable in the Pacific Islands where boundaries, species, and strategies consistently cross paths. And for each conservation partner to be reminded of how we can leverage our unique authorities and resources to bring about habitat restoration and species recovery.
