Know your subject. Whether in your backyard or a local park, research the birds you are capturing. Learn their behavior—it will help you predict their next move.
Approach birds at an angle so they don’t fly away.
Declutter. Carefully compose with the background in mind: position yourself for a clean backdrop or blur it by getting close and using a wide-open f-stop.
The rule of thirds: Place the subject about a third of the way from the edge of the viewfinder.
The GOLDEN HOUR makes a difference. Shoot in the early morning and late afternoon when the light is beautiful, and birds are most active.
Shoot at your subject’s eye level.
Birds in flight? Use at least a 400mm lens and a shutter speed of 1/2000 sec. or faster. Set your auto focus to continuous focus tracking and use a high burst mode.
Be patient and persistent.
