Before you visit Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, please check the weather and plan accordingly. The 2022 Hurricane Season is now upon us (June 1 – November 30) and we want everyone to be weather-aware and safely enjoy the refuge. During or after a storm even simply reaching the refuge can be hazardous. Our message to you is check ahead, check ahead, check ahead!
Severe weather can bring potential hazards traveling to the refuge as well as on the refuge -- downed trees, muddy, rutted and impassable roads and flooding are some of the potential dangers.
The refuge staff closely monitors NOAA and local weather forecasts. We will continue to proactively communicate with adjacent landowners and the public regarding hurricane forecasts and safety concerns on the refuge. Please regularly check the refuge Facebook page and information bulletins. For current road conditions, please call 252-796-3004 X225.
For additional hurricane preparedness information, please review the National Hurricane Preparedness website. And stay informed with your local emergency management agency. We want everyone to stay safe during hurricane season and enjoy their visits to Pocosin Lakes Refuge.
