Fundamentals of Bird Banding (Passerines)

COURSE SESSION

Target Audience:

Anyone who requires basic training in leg-banding of Passerine (perching) birds.

Summary and Objectives:

Bird banding is a universal and indispensable technique for studying the movement, survival and behavior of birds. The North American Bird Banding Program is jointly administered by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Canadian Wildlife Service. This online course provides introductory training material required to begin the process of being permitted by the USGS to leg band Passerine birds. Further hands-on training and apprenticeship under a master bander is required to be fully permitted to live-capture and band birds without supervision.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Provide all participants with the basic information needed to safely band birds.
  • Familiarize participants with the North American Bander's Study Guide, a training manual produced by the North American Banding Council.
