Pollinator garden in California.

From backyards to balconies to community gardens to master gardener projects, gardeners of all types can help monarch butterflies and other pollinators. Monarchs need habitat across the country, made up of both milkweed and flowering nectar plants. Since each state and region have different native plant communities, you can learn about what species are native to your area through the Xerces for Invertebrate Conservation plant guides, through your state natural resource agency or your state native plant society.

Here are a few tips for creating a monarch-friendly garden, no matter the size:

  • Plant pesticide-free native milkweed and native nectar plants. Look for plants that are labeled bee or butterfly friendly.
  • Select plants that bloom throughout the spring, summer and fall so you always have some color in your garden and nectar for butterflies.
  • Some native plants do better than others in small spaces. If you have a patio or balcony garden, or limited space, research which plants can thrive in containers and planters.
