Muscatatuck Wildlife Society

The Muscatatuck Wildlife Society is the non-profit, 501 c(3) support group for the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. The purpose of the group is to support the educational programs and activities of the refuge and to supplement and assist with wildlife and habitat projects.

Muscatatuck Wildlife Society members are people who care about wildlife and want to make Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge a better place for wildlife and people.The Muscatatuck Wildlife Society works closely with Refuge staff in their efforts to educate visitors about wildlife. Members of the group have the opportunity to get involved with the management of Indiana’s first and most visited national wildlife refuge national wildlife refuge
A national wildlife refuge is typically a contiguous area of land and water managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service  for the conservation and, where appropriate, restoration of fish, wildlife and plant resources and their habitats for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans.

Learn more about national wildlife refuge (established in 1966). The group manages a nature bookstore in the Visitor Center and uses the proceeds to fund refuge activities. Past projects of the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society have included the addition of a bird viewing room to the refuge Visitor Center, the restoration of Myers Cabin and Barn, the construction of observation decks and fishing piers, the funding for planting large areas of trees, copperbellied water snake research, pollinator plantings, giving financial support to the Indiana Junior Duck Stamp and Master Naturalist programs, developement of a Nature Discovery Area for children ,a monthly Nature Time Pre-school program, and assisting and supporting special events including the Wings Over Muscatatuck bird festival, Log Cabin Day, Take A Kid Fishing Day, Family Fishing Workshops, and National Public Lands Day cleanups.
