Overview
Cyrtandra crenata, a member of the Gesneriaceae (African violet) family, is a shrub 1 to 2 m (3 to·7 ft) tall with few branches. The leaves are arranged in whorls of three, tufted at the end of branches; they are generally elliptic or lance-shaped, 12 to 28 cm (4.7 to 11 in) long and 4 to 8 cm (1.6 to 3.1 in) wide, and have toothed margins. The upper leaf surface is generally hairless and has a wrinkled texture; the lower surface has only sparse hairs. Dense clusters of 3 to 7 white flowers, covered with thick brown hair, arise from the leaf axils. The calyx is bilaterally symmetrical, with the three upper lobes somewhat longer than the two lower lobes. The curved, funnel-shaped flowers, about 24 mm (0.9 in) long and 4 mm (0.2 in) wide, develop into fleshy ellipsoid berries about 1.8 cm (0.7 in) long that contain numerous tiny seeds. The berries, as well as various other plant parts, are covered with short-stalked, brownish, hemispherical glands. No individuals of Cyrtandra crenata have been observed since 1947. Enquiries were made of species experts in 2010 and they proposed that Cyrtandra crenata is likely a hybrid between C. hawaiensis and C. subumbellata, as reexamination of vouchers revealed, and both these species occurred in the same area. The Plant Extinction Prevention Program (PEPP) reassessed this species in 2013 and concluded that C. crenata is extinct, and in 2016, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) assessed the current status of C. crenata as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct). A new monograph of Hawaiian Cyrtandra and genetic studies are in preparation through which the status of C. crenata may be determined and this species status will be reassessed pending the results of these publications.
