Highbush Blueberry

Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is a shrub that blooms early in the growing season on the edge of forests and in scrub-shrub wetlands. Its white bell-shaped flowers are on display throughout Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Highbush blueberry’s fragrant flowers attract large numbers of bumble bees. Bumble bees have long tongues that are capable of fertilizing the deep flowers. It will bear fruit in early April before any other fruit is available to wildlife.
