Dr. David Meyer, Professor of Geology at University of Cincinnati, joined hatchery staff for the 2023 Fossil I.D. Workshop! With over 40 people in attendance, the workshop began with a presentation by Dr. Meyer detailing the geology/landscape of the area before delving into the most common fossils found at Lake Cumberland. Crinoids, blastoids, brachiopods, and trilobites were the main focus of this workshop including how to identify each of them, their age, how they are formed, and the best methods to find them. Along with pristine specimens brought in by Dr. Meyer as examples, participants were encouraged to bring in fossils they had collected on their own to be identified. Several found they had their own collection of crinoids and brachiopods at home! This workshop accrued so much interest that 2024 workshop dates are already in the works!
