Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery welcomed Garrard County Extension Office Agent, Eric Comley, who led the 2023 Plant Identification Workshop. Comley began with a presentation detailing how to photograph wildflowers; specifically the best angles, lighting, and equipment. Participants were then taught how to use a dichotomous key to identify trees of Kentucky. Samples of different trees had been collected ahead of time to give students some practice. Luckily the weather cleared up just in time for the outdoor portion of the workshop! Walking along the hatchery's nature trail, attendees were able to identify multiple plant species including spicebush, black cherry, black walnut, loblolly pines, white oaks, etc. While visiting, Eric found a unique native plant only known to flower once every five years; American Columbo! Hatchery staff look forward to hosting this workshop again in the future!
